Academic Council, being collegial and consultative organ, consists of leading research fellows of the Institute of Oriental Studies. The decisions of the Academic Council are of principal importance for implementation in Institute’s research activity. Academic Council coordinates scientific-research activity over fundamental, applied and international projects of the Institute, discusses scientific projects, results of researches, achievements of scientific scholarships, expeditions and missions, books and monographs. During the meetings of the Academic Council, research fellows of the Institute as well as domestic researchers present scientific-theoretical reports related to contemporary issues of Kazakhstani science. Specialists on the new researches in the field of oriental studies are invited from near and far abroad.

Academic Council’s main functions include:

- discussion of main spheres of Institute’s activity;

- approval of programs and plans of scientific-research activities, adoption of results of research efforts, training and professional development of research cadres, organization of conferences, meetings and seminars, publication of scientific works and other plans related to the scientific-organizing activities of the Institute;

- consideration of reports on scientific and scientific-organizing activities of Institute;

- discussion of issues related to changes in Institute’s structure and to utilization of general sum expenditures on the scientific-research activities allocated to Institute;

- organization of discussions on the most relevant problems of oriental studies, hearing and evaluation of reports on actual problems of oriental studies development;

- discussion of issues related to coordination and creative cooperation with other scientific organizations;

- hearing of reports on scientific and scientific-organizing activities of Institute’s structural departments, their heads and individual research fellows;

- consideration of results of scientific-research work implemented by fixed-term creative collectives according to requests and agreements;

- discussion of issues of Institute’s international cooperation, the temp of realization of researches implemented in collaboration with foreign organizations, hearing of research fellows’ reports on their foreign scientific missions;

- discussion of issues related to training and professional development of research cadres;

- recommendation of scientific works’ manuscripts written by individual collectives and research fellows for publication, approval of executive editors and the structure of editorial boards for Institute’s publications;

- discussion of results of announced vacancies for replacement of vacant positions of heads of departments and sectors, chief, leading, senior and junior research fellows and recommendation of candidatures to the Director of Institute to contract them for a defined period;

- discussion and making decisions on the issues of scientific attestation activity of Institute;

- nomination of scientific works, discoveries and inventions for the state awards and prizes;

- nomination in the established order of candidatures of Institute’s research fellows, who largely contributed to the development of science, for awarding of academic and honorable titles;

- nomination of candidates for the State awards of the Republic of Kazakhstan and for membership in the National Academy, support of candidates for the membership in other Academies;

- consideration and discussion of other issues within own jurisdiction and according to the statutory activity of Institute.
